artless Inc. is proud to announce that our branding project for ‘hotel kanra kyoto’ was honored with the Merit Award from DFA Design for Asia Awards 2017, one of the most coveted design awards in Asia.
The DFA Awards is an internationally recognized program launched in 2003 by the Hong Kong Design Centre with the aim of cementing Hong Kong’s role as the epicenter of design in Asia. With a focus on the ever-expanding design industry in Asia, the DFA Award recognizes and celebrates exemplary designs with an Asian perspective. Design projects are judged on four criteria; overall excellence, use of technology, impact in Asia, and commercial and societal success. With over a thousand entries from more than 23 countries across the globe, the DFA Awards has a strong international influence in Asia. The awards ceremony will take place on December 6th in Hong Kong, and the winning works will be exhibited during “IDFA Awards Exhibition at DesignInspire” at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre for three days from December 7th to the 9th.
With the reopening of ‘hotel kanra kyoto’ in October 2016, artless Inc. was in charge of creating the visual identity as well as the signage system of the hotel.
The design tenet for this project was ‘Kirei-sabi’, an aesthetic sense and philosophy of Kyoto/Japan, which was realized through the logotype, typography, pictograms, and the tastefully weathered color scheme of coal black and copper red that were used in the signage and print materials.
While elements of traditional Japanese culture are present in all levels of the design, to meet demands of a growing inbound market in Kyoto, all written materials are in both Japanese and English. Our goal for this project was to build a new brand image of ‘hotel kanra kyoto’ that is international in scope with a Japanese essence.

アジアデザイン賞（DFA）は、香港をアジアのデザイン拠点として位置づけるべく、2003年に香港デザインセンターの主催によって開始された世界的なデザイン賞で、飛躍的な進化を続けるアジア市場にフォーカスし、文化的視点、継続性、伝統と技術、アジア社会への影響度の4つの観点で優れたデザインを評価し、毎年世界23カ国以上、1000件以上のエントリーを数える国際的なアワードです。
本年度は2017年12月6日に香港で授賞式が行われ、12月7～9日の3日間 Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centreにて開催される「IDFA Awards Exhibition at DesignInspire」にて作品の展示が予定されています。
artless Inc.は、2016年10月に「ホテル カンラ 京都」がリニューアルオープンするにあたり、V.I. 及びサインデザインのリニューアルを担当しました。日本及び京都の持つ美意識と上質な佇まい、そしてデザインコードを「綺麗さび」とし、ロゴタイプ、基本書体 / アイコン、少しエイジングのかかった漆黒、銅赤色をサインや印刷物に採用する等、ブランドカラーを設定。日本の伝統文化を感じられる要素を各所に散りばめながら、増え続けるインバウンド重要に対応するためにも英語と日本語のバイリンガル表記とし、インターナショナルなトーンアンドマナーで新しいhotel kanra kyotoのブランドイメージの構築を目指したプロジェクトです。また、ロゴタイプにおいては「日本タイポグラフィ年間2018」にも入選しました。
