Nowadays, a variety of things has changed into digital from analog, the market has became more global, design is widely and deeply growing in importance. In this exhibition, we are presenting our client works by artless Inc. that continue with design approach to such times, to show the tracks of our design expression and how to be in the future.

川上俊／ Shun Kawakamiの個展、“arnk; arrival unknown”。
本展では、近年制作したアートワークを結集させるとともに、
新作も発表します。白と黒（=光と影）が成すモノク ロームの美術表現と、
印刷や映像、インスタレーションなどの様々なデザイン的アプローチをお楽しみ下さい。
2011年12月4日（日）にはオープニングレセプション、
2012年1月9日（月／祝日）には、アーティストトークが予定されています。

本展覧会について：

　川上俊はデザイナーとして活躍すると同時に、アーティストとしてもエキシビションの開催・参加及びキュレーション、各メディアへのアートワークの出品など、国内外で精力的に活動しています。川上はモノクロームの美術表現と、印刷や映像、インスタレーションなどの様々なデザイン手法を織り交ぜ、独特の和を表現する作品を発表してきました。それは単なる日本の伝統美への回帰には留まらず、西洋思想を独自に解釈し、取り入れた独創的なものです。それゆえ川上の作品は国外の人々には勿論、私達日本人にとっても新たな日本の魅力や日本らしさに気付かせてくれる新鮮さをもち、カンヌ国際広告祭金賞を受賞の他、NY ADC：Young Gun 6、D&AD賞、NY TDC賞、One Show、London International Awards、グッドデザイン賞、東京インタラクティブアワードなど、世界各国で高い評価を受けるに至りました。

　川上は作中で間や余白を重んじ、空間に緊張感をもたせ、目に見えない「わび・さび」や「幽玄」の心を表現しています。 余白を、描かれた対象やテーマの本質を引き出す演出効果であると考え、ここに価値を求めるのです。実際に川上の作中の余白、何もない無の空間は全体の動きや表現に大きな影響を与えています。無駄なものが剥ぎ落とされたストイックさを兼ね備えつつも、見る者の自由で多様な解釈を受け入れるゆとりある気風はここに起因するといえます。

　また、川上の作品の織り成す白と黒のモノクロームの世界は、様々な可能性と奥行きを潜めています。白と黒は光と影を初めとし、各時代や場所に流布する宗教的・文化的・政治的な傾向を象徴するもので、その孕む意味合いや、与える印象が常に変化し続ける興味深い概念です。川上は作中で多様なアプローチを用い、この白と黒から成るモノクロームの表現を追究し続けています。

　そして川上は作品を自らの手で一枚一枚プリントするため、同じ作品が出来上がることはありません。金箔や銀箔を手貼りした紙など、不均一で繊細な素材には、その日の気温や湿度に合わせてプリンティングを行う必要があります。川上がその場でインクの乗りを確認しつつ、臨機応変に作品に手を加えながらプリンティングをしていく様相は、印刷という大量消費するために生まれた現代的技術を活用しつつも、希少な美術価値のある作品を模索するという側面をもちます。

　本展はこうした川上のこれまでの作品を結集させるとともに、新作の発表を含むオムニバス展です。川上の作品を、日本の伝統美、そして自らのアイデンティティへの回帰を再考する契機としていただければ幸いです。

Shun Kawakami
Artist / Designer / Art Director
Born in Tokyo in 1977. Represents artless Inc. Kawakami has been actively involved in a wide array of creative endeavors including design, art, branding, interactive, video, product, installation, and space production. In 2010, he won the Gold Award at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival for the work he produced for a TV channel in Finland (ch4). Kawakami has been energetically involved in sponsoring exhibitions and projects in Japan and overseas as well as curation while also submitting his art works to different media. In 2008, he was selected to participate in the Kansei-Japan Design Exhibition at Les Arts Décoratifs (Musée du Louvre, paris), sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to commemorate the 150th year of the Japan-France relationships. For this occasion, he produced a unique art book. Kawakami has won several prestigious international awards including NY ADC: Young Gun 6, NY ADC, NY TDC, The One Show and The London International Award. Also in Japan, Kawakami has won numerous awards including Tokyo TDC, Good Design Award and Tokyo Interactive Ad Award. His professional membership includes New York Art Directors Club (NY ADC) and Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc.

平和紙業株式会社よりリリースされたハイクオリティペーパー「deep-mat（ディープマット）」。しっとりとした質感、厚紙ではなかなか見つけることのできない11色のカラー展開をしています。このカラーはワインを出発点にインスピレーションを広げ、シックで大人な印象のカラーセレクトをしています。下記の作品はエンボス加工、金箔／銀箔印刷見本およびペーパーサンプルですが、ただのサンプルではなく「bookmark」としてユーザーに持ち歩いてもらい紙のクオリティを実感してもらおうとサンプルとしてだけの機能ではなく、実体験に繋がるデザインを試みています。artlessは、「deep-mat（ディープマット）」の開発時からプロジェクトに参加し、カラーや紙の質感についてのアドバイスおよびコンサルティング、そして、プロモーショングッズのデザインを行っています。

アーティスト・ブック限定発売（300部限定：サイン／シリアルナンバー入）

artlessの川上俊と、デザイン・ユニットkotenhitsを代表する河田孝志の２人がタッグを組み、Composition of knowledge and feeling（知識と感覚の集合体）」を始動。その名を冠し、2009年10月にJAGDA TOKYOのエキシビションでアートワークを発表した。２人の作品には、共通して世界的に活躍するバルーン・アーティスト「Daisy balloon」とのコラボレーションしている。バルーンという共通モチーフを独自のアップローチで「:balloon」が制作された。エキシビションのオープニングと同時にアーティスト・ブックを300部限定で発売され、artlessが開発している特殊インク「kawakami black」にて印刷されている。

Born in Austria, Simone Pasztorek studied graphic design in Vienna and later graduated from Central St Martins, London. After working for TANK magazine, she joined with Jay Hess under the name byBOTH. She has designed magazines, books and packaging, mainly for fashion clients.

Before graduating from Central St Martins, London, Jay Hess studied graphic design in NC State University. He has worked as a designer for a number of years, in the US and UK. He now runs the London-based studio byBOTH with Simone Pasztorek, mainly working in the fields of editorial, graphic, type and web design.

Art Director Jopsu Ramu from Musuta Ltd. has created together with Shun Kawakami (artless Inc.) an artist and designer from Tokyo – a piece titled Urban Abstract. This digital art piece was commissioned by TV Nelonen and it is being shown as the November break bumpers on one of the biggest commercial TV channels in Finland: TV Nelonen.

Urban Abstract -piece was born in Tokyo during 2009.
It consists of 40 X five second clips, or it can also be viewed as a one 200 second journey.

D&Ad Awards

The piece was awarded bronze in this years D&Ad awards, it was selected for the book ‘The Best Advertising and Design in the World 2010′ to be published by Taschen. Urban Abstract was picked amongst more than 20 000 pieces submitted to D&Ad and was among the seven pieces chosen in the highly competed TV & Cinema Communications category. D&AD is an organization that represents the global creative, design and advertising communities. Since 1962, D&AD has set industry standards and educated and inspired the next generation.

URBAN ABSTRACT – About the concept:

Urban Abstract is a journey across urban space that unfolds in forty, 5 second parts. The journey, in one, two and three dimensions, is a bit like abstract surfing in which the original destination is only reached after a number of seemingly random yet linked detours occur. Points , lines, planes and other abstract elements create a journey through an Urban Abstract.
The space between things is as important as intended space, perhaps creating a fourth dimension. Meaningful shapes and purposes occur in this dimension’s reality as well. The concept of “negative space” has meaning here.
Nature plays a part as well. To be able to understand and differentiate what is urban one has understand what is nature.
The style of the shorts is fluid and, though seemingly random, stream into a cohesive whole. Perhaps watching them in a different order would be more like seeing the same journey from another point of view. The sound world is also very important — movement in space is sensed even if watching the shorts with eyes closed. Sounds overlap, fade, come and go.
Architectural, abstract, someway minimalist and abstract with a touch of humanity.
This feeling is reached through mixing techniques such as vectors , hand drawn lines and painting.
Urban Abstract was realized in Tokyo by a team of artists, designers and animators from Finland and Japan.

Jopsu Ramu
Jopsu Ramu (born 1982). Jopsu is a young, successful Finnish designer and an art director (awarded by D&Ad, European Design Awards) who runs her own design studio Musuta Ltd. Jopsu Ramu creates art, graphics, space & design.

Shun Kawakami (artless Inc.)
Shun Kawakami is a highly awarded designer & artist living in Tokyo. He is also the founder and chief of Artless Inc. He has won awards in many design competitions from NYADC Young Gun6, Type Director’s club (TDC) to Art Director’s Club (ADC). He has also held many exhibitions in Japan, Europe and the U.S.

Introducing Paxton’s body philosophy reinterpreting the frameworks of various physical sensation and action in a fusion of contemporary dance and art.
A leading figure in American post-modern dance, dancer/choreographer Steve Paxton is visiting Japan for the first time in 34 years. At YCAM, Steve Paxton presents a new video installation, centered around which a variety of events including demonstrations by the artist himself, and lectures with invited experts, take place as a comprehensive introduction to Paxton’s body philosophy.
Through the experience of a video installation and other events explaining Paxton’s methods and original artistic work, which keep influencing the current dance scene, this exhibition introduces Paxton’s work from the contexts of social and historical circumstances in the 1960s, and looks at the present form of the new physical and spatial qualities discovered through media-based artistic expression.

at Gyoko-dori Underground Gallery (Tokyo Station)

The Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi (a.a.t.m.), held at the Marunouchi Gyoko-dori Underground Gallery, is an art exhibition designed to help identify and provide support to young artists. This year’s exhibition will not disappoint; like past shows, it will be full of great talent!
The a.a.t.m. features works of art and artists selected from amongst graduation projects at Japan’s art universities and graduate schools. These are displayed at the Gyoko-dori Underground Gallery, and a Grand Prize is awarded to the top piece. The judges are all professionals who lead Japan’s art scene. The 143 artists introduced over the past three years include many new artists who have since risen to prominence and are already active on a variety of fronts. Thus the goal of which is to identify and encourage new artists, is yielding steady results with each event held. Vote for the Audience Prize, which gained the positive response last year! A brand new art spot in Marunouchi, the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum adds to Marunouchi’s character as a hotspot for art. We hope that everyone will enjoy this competition between the young artists who are a harbinger of the future of art.

The hotel is conveniently located, which is just 10 minutes walk from Shinjuku Station and on the side of Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Its bilingual staff serves the overseas visitors very well.To invite more customers from other countries, an universal room was required. The other three rooms were needed to be capable of accommodating much more people per room to meet the demands of families and youth.We attempted to create a special Japanese space balancing the Japan-ness, the element of Japan-style room, delighting overseas customers and its history and memory accumulated there.We focused on three points. First of all, some of the walls, which were carefully selected considering the sense of touch and natural light, are exposed. In addition, “sumi”s, markings for construction guidance, were deliberately left. Finally, the minimum Japan-style elements, the light well in the universal room and the tatami floors of the others, were added. Consequently, it became extremely Japanese and people can feel its unique stateliness and tenseness there.The reason why tatami flooring was chosen was that people can utilise the floor in various ways by putting futon down and away. To advance its tenseness, hemmed tatamis were arranged together with vinyl flooring.Although it was just one floor that we concerned, the balance with the other floors also had to be considered. To achieve the balance as a whole, the design of its lift floor was not completely changed but just adjusted. Instead, to make the entrance impressive, the wooden gate was installed on the boundary between the lift floor and the corridor. The ceiling of the common corridor is covered with the 7-metre-long work by Shun Kawakami, an artist. Additionally, the effective lighting design makes the artwork stand out and their combination raises people’s expectation of the guest rooms.

東京都、新宿に位置する、ホテルのワンフロア(4室)の改修工事。対象のホテルは、新宿駅から徒歩10分、新宿御苑の側と言う恵まれた立地と、バイリンガルなスタッフによるサービスによって、海外からの来客が多いという特徴があった。より広く、海外からの来客を受け入れるため、バリアフリーの部屋を1室作ること、そのほか3室に関しては、家族連れ、若い宿泊客を対象に、できる限り多くの人数で一室に宿泊可能なことが求められた。海外からの来客に、日本らしさを感じてもらうための和室の要素と、既存物件に蓄積された情報のバランスを取りながら、ここでしか成立できない日本的な空間を目指した。質感、自然光の関係によって選定され、限定的に露出された壁面と、建設当時に躯体に刻まれた「スミ」、最小限の和室の要素 ( バリアフリーの部室における光庭、そのほか3室における畳 ) にそぎ落としてデザインされた空間は、独特の重みと、緊張感を生み出し、結果的に 極めて日本的な空間を生み出している。畳を選んだのは、布団の上げ下げによる使い方の多様性からであり、あえて帯付きの畳を選択し、長尺シートと取り合わせることで、空間全体の緊張感を高めている。ワンフロアのみの改修工事であることから、他のフロアとのバランスも重要であり、エレベーターホールを既存デザインの調整にとどめることで、全体との調和を促し、共用廊下との境に、門形ゲートを設置することで、印象的なエントランスとして切り替えを計っている。共用廊下の天井には、7メートルに渡って グラフィックデザイナー / 川上俊の作品を埋込み、効果的な照明計画と合わせて、客室への期待感を高める、前室としている。

blanc. is the critically acclaimed solo project and alter-ego of Maynard Plant, lead vocalist of the popular Japanese pop-rock band Monkey Majik. The project began in 2003 with the meeting of Maynard and Sendai City co-resident Takeshi Hanzawa of FreeTEMPO. Maynard sang and wrote the lyrics for the house tracks “Sky High”, “Duet” and “New Days” on FreeTEMPO’s 2nd album “THE WORLD IS ECHOED” under the pseudonym “blanc.”. This collaboration, now legendary, marked the beginning of blanc.’s career. Since then, blanc. has collaborated with many electronic and house musicians. In March of 2008 he produced and released his first album “new world”. blanc.’s much anticipated 2nd album “canvas” was released June 10th, 2009. The new album is a fusion of electronic, organic, house and pop music.

concept of design :
The space between the number on count-up. That space is what we consider as time itself.
We creates that time of the space as an image into the three dimension world.
Eleven of “IKEBANAS” are created as three dimension object and arranged into the vast space.
The camera sequentially cathes those works like being thrown into the flow of time one by one.
