Art direction by artless Inc., MODERN KYOTO CERAMIC is an experimental gathering of contemporary artists with the aim of exploring the past, present, and future of ‘Kyo-yaki’, traditional high-fired ceramics produced in Kyoto.
We strongly identified with the group’s vision and had operated as an art director for their exhibition MODERN KYOTO CERAMICS 2015.
Our activities were not only limited to graphic design, but had also had a hand in producing signage and spatial design, as well as setting up a website that chronicled the participating artists’ creative journeys.
As an ongoing project we are dedicated to supporting the creativities, and will continue to relay the talent and vision of the artist at MODERN KYOTO CERAMIC.

MODERN KYOTO CERAMIC is an experimental space created for the pursuit of the pottery symbolizes the age we live in ‘now’.
Many skilled artisans and potters feature in the history of ‘Kyo-yaki’: Nonomura Ninsei and Ogata Kenzan in the Edo period; Kinkozan Sobei and Seifu Yohei in the Meiji period; and Yagi Kazuo in the postwar period.
These potters – influenced by the times they lived in – strove to pursue the ‘now’ of their respective eras and succeeded in producing pottery that defined them.
MODERN KYOTO CERAMIC takes a different theme based on ‘Kyo-yaki’ every year.

「MODERN KYOTO CERAMIC」
「MODERN KYOTO CERAMIC」
