We were approached by Hosai Matsubayashi the 16th generation master of Asahiyaki, the pottery workshop in Uji/Kyoto with a 400 year history; to design an invitation card, pamphlet, and gift wrapping paper for the Name-taking ceremony held last autumn and the Shorokai event celebrating its 50th year.

With its origin as a booster club for Asahiyaki, Shorokai has grown to become a gathering place for like-minded people who share an interest in the tea culture of Uji and enjoy modern handicrafts. Through a reserved and stately design that uses the culturally significant pine tree as a key motif, our goal was to capture the event’s long and rich history. The yatsuhashi handed out as a gift at the Name-taking ceremony was provided by Shogoin Yatsuhashi, the originator of the popular regional confectionary. We designed a wrapping paper that reflects the quality and sophistication of the gift.

With design as our medium, artless will continue to spread and pass on the rich cultures of Japan as exemplified by Asahiyaki and Shorokai, as well as the ‘authentic Japanese aesthetic’; to the world.

400年の歴史をもつ京都・宇治の茶陶「朝日焼」の窯元、16代目となる松林豊斎氏よりご依頼いただき、昨年秋に行われた襲名披露会および50周年を迎えた「松露会」インビテーションカード・パンフレット・贈答品の掛け紙のデザインを担当させていただきました。

「松露会」とは50年前、「朝日焼」の後援会としてスタートし、広く宇治の茶の文化に親しみ、現代の工芸を愉しむことに共感する人々が集う場として発展してきました。長い歴史とともに美しい文化として伝承されてきたその姿を、日本の伝統文化を思わせる「松」をモチーフに、静かな中にも凛とした佇まいのあるデザインによって表現いたしました。また贈答品の八ツ橋は、京都で最も古い歴史を持ち、八ツ橋の発祥とされる老舗店「聖護院八ツ橋総本店」の御品物。その品格を踏襲した、上質な掛け紙をデザインしております。

今後もartlessは、「朝日焼」「松露会」のように、深く日本に根づいた美しい文化や「真の日本の美」をデザインの力によって広く発信する活動を続けていきます。
