Seafood restaurant “abysse” lead by the young owner-chef Kotaro Meguro was awarded the Michelin 1-star within a year of its opening in March 2015 in Gaienmae, Tokyo. As part of their move to Daikanyama in March 2019, we were in charge of branding as well as holistic art direction and design, encompassing the logo, V.I., graphic design, signage, website, uniforms, and ambient music.

The French word “abysse”, in addition to signifying the depth of the ocean, carries the meaning “of having depth”. In creating the logomark and brand color we drew inspiration from their concept of evoking the oceanic depths and deepness of the flavor of their dishes. In the interior, the use of wood salvaged from the ocean expresses the depth of both the ocean and forest.

The menus styled like letters welcoming guests to their tables are adorned with foil stamps and signed by the chef. In order to design a complete dining experience, we carefully selected the chef uniforms in the open kitchen as well as curating the ambient music to stimulate the senses while creating a serene atmosphere.

The aim of our branding project is to express their reverence for the ocean, forest, and approach to materials, in the hopes of ushering “abysse” into the global stage.

2015年3月に東京・外苑前にオープンし、1年と経たずにミシュラン1つ星を獲得した若きオーナーシェフ目黒浩太郎氏による魚介にフォーカスしたガストロミーレストラン「abysse(アビス)」。今年3月、代官山への移転を機に ロゴ や V.I. からグラフィック/サイネージ/ウェブ/ユニホーム/BGM と、包括的なアートディレクションとデザインによるブランディングを担当しました。

「abysse」とは、フランス語「深海」「奥深きもの」という意味があり、その言葉の意から海面から深海までの深さと料理の味わいの奥深さを表現するというコンセプトのもと、シンボルマークやブランドカラーの選定されています。インテリアデザインも海に沈んでいた古木を使用する壁面など、深い海と深い森を同時に表現が行われています。

ゲストがテーブル着いたとき、はじめに目にする封筒に入った手紙のようなメニュー、繊細に特別なカラーの箔押しでデザインされ、シェフにからの感謝の気持ちも込めサインも施されています。オープンキッチンにしたことで姿が見えるシェフ達のユニホームデザインとカラー選定、感性を刺激しつつ心地よい空気としてのBGM、料理だけでなく、レストランにおけるフィジカルな体験や演出も丁寧に考えデザインさせれています。

「abysse」の海と森に敬意を表する哲学や素材へのアプローチを表現し、グローバルステージへと導くためのブランディングとしてデザインを行っています。

about project:

We were assigned to create the interior and furniture design for the coffee stand situated on the ground floor lobby of “sky mansion” in Zhengzhou city, China.

Owing to its central location in China, Zhengzhou city had through the years flourished as a major transportation hub and in recent years has welcomed a plethora of overseas manufacturing companies leading to its exponential economic growth. The client experienced significant growth with the supply of housing through its real-estate company and is now on a steadfast mission of making Zhengzhou an even greater city. With a goal of elevating the cultural significance of the city, it has been developing and managing hotels, commercial facilities, and cultural centers. “sky mansion” opened its doors in September 2018 as a serviced apartment for long-term residents.

We were responsible for overseeing all design elements of “sky mansion”, including the logo, V.I, signage, amenities, uniforms, website, as well as the coffee stand. Sharing the design ethos with “artless craft tea & coffee”, the coffee stand adjoining our office in Tokyo, “sky cafe” makes use of domestically sourced flakeboard, and black steel plates. The resulting space harmonizes with the mortar and terrazzo-lined lobby of the mansion and serves as a place where guests and residents can enjoy a time of peace and comfort. In addition to the menus and cups used in the cafe, we designed the bespoke stools and low-tables with its forms inspired by the “sky mansion” logo. The center-piece table has an integrated light that subtly illuminates the drinks while never getting in the way of people having conversations.

中国・河南省 / 鄭州市にオープンした sky mansion (中国名:郑州建业天筑国际公寓)の一階ロビーに常設するコーヒースタンドのインテリアデザインの基本設計ならびに家具のデザイン・製作を行いました。

鄭州市は中国の地理的な中心に位置し古来交通の要衝として栄え、近年では外資系を含む製造業が集積し経済的な成長を続けています。クライアントは住宅供給によって大きく成長した不動産会社を母体とし、鄭州をより良い都市にするという明確なビジョンを掲げ、都市としての文化レベルの向上を目的として、ホテルや商業施設、文化施設の開発・運営を行っています。sky mansionは長期滞在者向けサービスアパートメントとして、2018年9月にオープンしました。

artlessではsky mansionのロゴからV.I.構築、サイン、アメニティ、制服、WEBまでトータルでのアートディレクションおよびデザインを行っており、その一部としてコーヒースタンドを設計しました。東京中目黒のartless Inc. ヘッドオフィスに併設するartless craft tea & coffeeのラーチ合板と鉄板を主としたデザインをベースとしつつも、中国国内でも品質のバラツキなく調達できるOSB合板を使用し、sky mansionのロビーのテラゾーとモルタルを基調としたクールな空間の中に、滞在者が落ち着いて時間を過ごせる空間をつくることを意図しました。また、カフェで使用されるメニューやカップの他にもスツールとローテーブルはsky mansionのロゴの形状を元にオリジナルでデザインしています。スペース中央のテーブルは、手元は照らしながら向かいの席の人とのコミュニケーションを邪魔しない照明と一体となったデザインになっています。

J18 is an ongoing city planning project in Zhengzhou city, Henan province, China. The large-scale mixed-use development composed of four districts, includes residences, commercial facilities, hotels, cultural centers, as well as parks, greenery, and a river. A city within a city, the development is roughly four to five times the size of Tokyo Midtown.

We were in charge of signage design for the sales office for the J18 residences. The interior was designed by Shanghai and London-based inter-disciplinary architectural design practice Neri&Hu Design and Research Office. Our designs for the way-finding and pictograms drew inspiration from the form and material of the architecture as well as the curving letter-form of the “J” from J18. With an eye towards a more global future of China, all information is presented bilingually.

J18は、中国・河南省/鄭州市で進んでいる都市開発プロジェクトです。4つのブロックからなる区画では、レジデンス、商業施設、ホテル、文化施設など、複数の大型施設をそれぞれ有し、公園や緑地、河川などのランドスケープも含む大規模複合施設です。区画スケールとしては、東京ミッドタウンの約4~5倍サイズとなります。

このJ18区画レジデンス向けセールスオフィスのサインデザインをartless Inc.が担当しました。インテリアデザインは、上海・ロンドンを拠点とし、今アジアで注目を集める建築・デザインユニットである「Neri&Hu Design and Research Office 」が手がけています。彼らのインテリアデザインのコンセプトから、マテリアルやシェイプなどを踏襲して空間に統一感を持たせながらも、J18のJと空間デザインの曲線を織り交ぜた、オリジナルのディレクションサイン、ピクトグラムをデザインしています。また、インフォメーションは英語と中国語のバイリンガル表記とし、少し先の未来にあるグローバルな中国というデザインコードを設定しています。
